To Our Newly Discovered Grandson - We Love You!

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

In April of this year(2009)we received a phone call at our home in Arkansas. My wife answered the call and I could tell by the look on her face that something was up. As she handed me the phone she stated; "This guy says he is calling about your grandson." This was a shocking revelation as neither of us were aware of any grandsons.

I took the phone from my wife and introduced myself to the man on the other end. He identified himself as the stepfather of my grandson. I informed him that to my knowledge, I didn't have a grandson. It was at this point that he told me who the child's mother was.

The reason for the man's call was to gain medical history as the young man now 15 years old was suffering from some sort of heart irregularity. I provided the information requested. Talk about mixed emotions! Joy that we had a grandson, anxiety that he was somehow ill, and sadness that we didn't know him.

We lost our son, Louis Phillip Barry, in an automobile accident in 1995. After receiving this call, I commenced to contact our son's closest friends. They all believed Steven could very well be our grandson.

We've learned Steven Elkins is now 15 years old. We learned that for a large portion of his young life he lived less than 60 miles from us. We discovered that at the age of 3 he almost lost his life. We now know he was born somewhere in middle Tennessee on October 20th, 1993. He now resides somewhere in Florida. We hear he is having a great summer, fishing and hanging out on the beach.

We have received some pictures and a little bit of history from his stepfather by email. As of yet we have not spoken with him. We don't know what he knows about us, his father or the rest of his father's family.

We have faith that what is just and right will come to fruition and that the day is coming when we can hold our grandson in our arms and let him know we care about him.
